KCS increases train speed on segments from Gulfport to Hattiesburg Line

July 1, 2012 / Updated July 4, 2012

Class 1 Railroads

Kansas City Southern Railway Co. increased train speed over some segments of its Gulfport to Hattiesburg, MS line from 10-25 mph in early June.

The increase in train speed over these track segments is the result off a major track rehabilitation effort that will enhance economic development opportunities at the Port of Gulfport, according to KCS.

Trains going through downtown Wiggins are restricted to 10 mph. Rail speed limits south of I-10 also will not increase.

Big Boy Bliss

In a deviation from normal cover content, the Cowcatcher features the latest in 4000 series Big Boys, Minitrix's N-scale No. 4013. Why? It's one smooth-running model and the mood was just right. No. 4013 pulled 26 cars and a caboose effortlessly on Olaf Melhouse's Dakota Northern at the same time Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 was rolling through North Texas on its latest tour across the Midwest. Both the model and prototype are equally impressive. Check out the full review in the November/December 2024 issue.
