While Dallas Area Rapid Transit has been in the Gold Rail winner’s circle in the past, the agency is once again taking a back seat to its Fort Worth counterpart and partner, the Trinity Railway Express.

For the second straight year, Cowcatcher readers chose the TRE over DART for Best Passenger Rail/Commuter-Light Rail.

It was recognized withthe Gold Rail Achievement Award for the advances it made in 2014 while building on its legacy as the nation’s largest light rail system. The award is given for making a significant contribution to the regional railroad landscape. Winners of the annual competition, which determines the best of the best in model railroading and rail enthusiasm, were announced in the magazine’s January/February issue.

In August, DART arrived ahead of schedule to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, linking the world’s third busiest airport. The Orange Line extension from Belt Line Station to the rebuilt Terminal A at DFW brought the nation’s longest light rail system to 90 miles.

“We could not have achieved this rail opening early and under budget without the incredible partnership with DFW Airport,” DART CEO Gary Thomas said. “Construction of the station and the Orange Line extension has been a true collaboration.”

More readers collaborated in this year’s Gold Rail Awards competition. Garnering an all-time high response rate of 22 percent, readers made their picks count using digital ballots in the sixth annual celebration. Subscribers and other readers were emailed surveys, which boosted participation.

In the end, a broader swath of winners from eight states are being crowned for 2014.

Some longtime winners retained their titles, and a few new ones took home the gold.

Three winners repeated for an unprecedented sixth time. The Oklahoma City Train show took Best Train Show, Discount Model Trains claimed Best Model Train Show, and the Fort Worth & Western Railroad captured Best Regional Freight Railroad.

Among the first-time winners were the Colorado Model Railroad Museum for Best Club Layout, Permanent; the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for Best Excursion Railroad; and the Illinois Railway Museum for Best Railroad Museum. IR narrowly edged the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, last year’s winner.

Best New Model Railroad Product went to Walthers’ HO San Francisco Chief passenger car set. This was the second straight year that a Walthers product won. Soundtraxx’s Sound Car System came in second.

The Grapevine Vintage Railroad’s North Pole Express took Best Excursion Railroad Theme Train. The Ark-La-Tex Model Railroad Club returned to the winner’s circle by taking Best Club Layout, Modular.

“24 Hours at Saginaw” was voted Best Rail Special Event.

Throttling Up

Ever wonder why railroads chose certain locomotives to pull freight trains? Railroads have practiced multiple-unit train control since the 1890s when Frank J. Sprague developed a system to combine motive power in electric train operation. When assigning power and consisting locomotives today, railroads generally match the horsepower per ton and tractive effort ratings to specific locomotives designed to meet specific network needs. But other factors are involved, and it's not uncommon for railroads to mix makes and models of locomotives when consisting for trains.

State of Model Railroading

Response to the Cowcatcher’s 2025 State of Model Railroading survey was positive and many say the hobby is rolling along fine, maybe a bit complicated for some. The 31-question survey sent to readers across the U.S. in November earned a 42 percent response rate. Questions ranged from personal preferences and skill levels and layouts to how modelers buy and spend.

Joint Agency

Whether shuttling power, moving cars through interline carrier agreements or running on joint lines, North America’s largest rail providers interact. One of the more obscure examples is the Milwaukee Road’s Joint Agency Yard in Kansas City, MO, where the Milwaukee Road and Kansas City Southern coexisted for 40 years. On the N-scale Whitehurst & Pine Ridge Railroad, joint yard agreements in Kansas City and Dallas make sense, allowing KCS traffic to move in and out of both ends of the layout to service grain customers without the need for another yard.

Plus

BNSF posts record agricultural volumes on the heels of a good harvest. A Milwaukee Road stock car with a storied past is now on display at the Galveston Railroad Museum. And a United Kingdom retailer and manufacturer introduces its camera car, the Eye-Choo, to the U.S. And more!
